As the runners took to the starting line in Waikiki, they were greeted with cool, humid conditions and strong 10-15 mile per hour trade winds that existed the afternoon and evening before. Despite these challenges, they were determined to push through and give it their all in the 26.2 mile race. Last year's champion, Lani Merchant of Canada, also toed the line, ready to defend her title and fight for the win.

As the race progressed, Bere quickly emerged as the front runner, pulling ahead of the pack at just 7 miles into the race. She was accompanied by a Japanese male runner, but as they approached the halfway point, Bere put her head down and moved away from him, determined to maintain her lead in despite the heavy head wind she hit the half marathon in 1:15:42. Her form was impressive as she maintained a steady pace, only faltering slightly as she made her way down Diamond Head.

Despite the tough conditions, Bere seemed to thrive under the pressure, powered by the huge cheers of the fans and fellow racers. As she cruised down the home stretch, it was clear that she was on track to claim the top prize at the 50th Annual Honolulu Marathon, in 2:30:58, but did not claim the course record set in 2017 by Bridid Kosgei 2:22:15.
